From the Icon to the Face;

Meeting with the mystery of Beauty and the Identity of the Sign

By definition, the Icon is not a portrait, but a real, timeless image that figuratively expresses the relationship with the ineffable and is therefore the place where you go from visible to invisible ... What we believe to be of great value in the contemporary approach to the ancient icon is the possibility of an encounter with a beauty different from that of the aesthetic canon of our time, based almost entirely on exteriority. The attention to a stylized image, designed with a high aim of overcoming the visible and meeting with a deeper and not stereotyped feeling, we believe can open the observer to a more authentic contact with himself and start a creative process that does not aim at the expectation of consent, but that of observing and experimenting, through the application of simple rules, one's own feeling, thus developing knowledge on nature, history and artisan and artistic techniques and acquiring skills not only visual and manuals, but also of discovery and management of one's deepest emotions.

About the workshop

The workshop aims to provide the first technical bases for the painting of icons with materials as much as possible corresponding to those of the historical tradition and to follow, the technical bases of drawing and drawing from life, pillars of visual perception and of the translation of it into expression.

Attention will be focused on the subject of the "face", the central theme of the ancient icons that retains great relevance in the investigation proposal that we will face: in fact, the Face is the pivot of each person's sensitive perceptive experience. We will paint, with the technique and materials of tradition, an image starting from the model of an ancient icon chosen among the classic ones proposed to the students. An anchorage to the past for a current passage that will lead us, after observing reality through the instrument of sign and drawing, to the creation of a portrait. A face, even self-portrait, that is made by a very young author.

* Results of a workshop in Montesanvito, Italy - March 2019 - 3rd Class of Primary School and 1st Secondary School

The practical part will always be preceded by a short and playful theoretical part. We will briefly talk about the history of icons, the role they played in the historical context in which they developed, with particular attention to the concepts that underlie their creation. The icon can play an important role in triggering and developing the creative process of individuals immersed in contemporary life, especially in the observation and analysis of the signs and significant parts, letters of an alphabet that speak of beauty. We will talk about points and lines (basic elements of the design) and how they can be used in a free and individual way to represent one's vision of reality, one's imagination, finally we will observe the face and face, a first approach to meeting with one's uniqueness.

The materials used are natural and the procedure through which they are produced is simple and allows you to be treated with even small children, opening up the possibility of an understanding and immediate contact with the elements of nature and their direct use. The pigments, the cotton canvas, the plaster, the glue, the wood, the gold, the egg have a direct reference to natural elements, sometimes even very close to the environment in which you live. Each ingredient used in the construction of the icon, can give rise to a short journey in chemistry, biology, basic craftsmanship activities (phlegnamery, textiles ...) and in their history; in this sense, the icon is a vehicle that opens up to the child a world made not of pre-packaged cans of unidentifiable materials to buy, but of plants, metals, minerals, organic elements that can be known first of all as something that exists in nature and that then, through understandable procedures, they become the necessary ingredients to create an artifact, an object through which you can express yourself.

In the following table the seven phases through which the experience can be divided:

1. Preparation of funds - set-up tests the base and materials

2. Drawing and gilding - the icon

3. Painting - the icon

4. Points lines and chiaroscuro - the grammar of the sign

5. Observation and translation from reality - the volume

6. Drawing and painting - the face

7. Exhibition and exchange - comparison between the works

The workshop is suitable for all people (at least 8 years of age). No artistic training or previous experience in the field of painting or figurative arts is required.

List of materials used: - Wooden Tavoletta - Cotton gauze - Bologna plaster - Rabbit glue - Pigments - Egg yolk - Mission for gilding - Gold leaf

The main stages of execution of the painting are the following:

Preparation of the base on the tablet with glue and plaster canvas: The rabbit glue is heated and applied on the surface of the tablet, the cotton gauze is placed and dabbed with the brush until it adheres perfectly, then the glue is passed again over the entire surface. The hot glue is mixed with gypsum and a first coat of glue and gypsum is given on an already coated board

Smoothing: A tablet with the first draft of plaster and glue is smoothed with abrasive paper. The procedure of applying plaster and glue is repeated. A tablet already brought to the last stage is smoothed to obtain a smooth and homogeneous surface, suitable for welcoming the paint.

Drawing: Tracing the image with tracing paper, going over the lines with a dry pastel and then transferred to the tablet, or the subject is drawn directly on the tablet.

Gilding: The mission is spread over the areas where the gold leaf will be applied and once the mission has dried the gold leaf is applied.

Painting: The subject is painted with egg tempera (the pigments already in powder and the egg yolk will be prepared and mixed at the moment)
